10 Reasons Why Shelter Dogs Are the Best
Did you know that October is Adopt a Dog Month? In honor of this special month, we’ve put together a list of the top 10 reasons why shelter dogs make the best pets.
- They’re grateful. Unlike some purebreds who have always had a family, shelter dogs know what it’s like to be alone. As a result, they’re incredibly grateful to have a family of their own and will do everything they can to please you.
- They’re typically already house-trained. Most shelter dogs are already house-trained before you even adopt them since they were likely living in homes before ending up in the shelter. This saves you the time and effort of having to potty train them yourself.
- They come in all shapes and sizes. Whether you’re looking for a small lap dog or a large protector, you’ll be able to find it at your local shelter. There are all sorts of dogs of all different breeds waiting to be adopted.
- You can adopt them for cheaper than buying from a breeder. On average, you can adopt a dog from a shelter for anywhere from $50 to $200. If you were to buy a dog from a breeder, however, you could end up paying upwards of $1,000+.
- By adopting a shelter dog, you’re saving a life. Every year, millions of dogs are put down in shelters because there simply aren’t enough homes for all of them. When you adopt a shelter dog, you’re not only getting a great pet, but you’re also giving that dog a second chance at life.
- They make great cuddle buddies. Shelter dogs are typically very affectionate and love nothing more than snuggling up with their human companion. If you’re looking for continuous cuddles, then adopting a shelter dog is definitely the way to go!
- They come with minimal baggage. Unlike some purebreds who come with years of baggage and health problems, most shelter dogs are relatively hassle-free since they’ve already been spayed or neutered and have all their vaccinations up-to-date.
- They usually get along well with kids…and other animals too! Since they’ve likely been around other animals while living in the shelter, most shelter dogs are already used to being around other creatures. This makes them great pets for families with young children or other pets
- They tend to be lower maintenance in general. Dogs who come from shelters are typically lower maintenance than other dogs since they don’t require as much grooming and care
- They tend to be less hyperactive. Shelter dogs have typically already burned off any excess energy by the time they get adopted so they tend to be less hyperactive than puppies or young adult dogs.
If you’re thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, adoption is definitely the way to go! Not only does it save you money, but it also gives you peace of mind knowing that you’re providing a loving home for an animal in need. And remember, every adoption makes room for another animal who needs help so by adopting just one animal, you’re indirectly helping many others as well!
